With more than four decades of teaching and producing shows behind me, I can say with confidence that nothing matches the magic of Danceforce. It is the highlight of our two-year calendar and the moment when every one of our dancers, from the youngest two-year-old Little Tot to our confident teenagers, takes to the stage in Basingstoke to shine
Unlike many productions, Danceforce is open to every Lynden dancer. Regardless of age or ability, each child has the opportunity to perform. For me, that inclusivity is at the heart of what we do as a school.
From Nervous First Steps to Confident Performances
One of the greatest joys for me and our teachers is watching the children’s confidence grow over the weekend. At the first performance there may be shy smiles, hesitant steps, or quick glances into the wings. By the final show, the transformation is incredible. Children come off stage buzzing, proud of themselves, and already asking when they can do it again.
Even our youngest dancers amaze us. The Little Tots often take to the stage as if it is the most natural thing in the world. Parents are often astonished to see their quiet or shy child light up under the theatre lights. Once the music begins, they throw themselves into the routine and enjoy every second.

Why Danceforce Matters
Taking part in a show like Danceforce is about much more than learning a routine. It is an experience that shapes children in lasting ways.
They learn:
- Confidence, by discovering they can stand tall and perform in front of an audience.
- Teamwork, by realising every dancer matters and contributes to the whole.
- Commitment, by seeing that attending rehearsals and being prepared helps everyone succeed.
- Resilience, by overcoming nerves, stepping out onto the stage, and feeling the reward of applause.
These lessons carry into all areas of life, from speaking at school to later interviews or presentations. Danceforce is not just about dance. It is about giving young people the chance to grow and believe in themselves.
Through a Child’s Eyes
For small children, performing in a dance show is simply another step in growing up. Just like learning to walk, climbing the stairs, or getting dressed, they treat it as a natural part of life. Children rarely see anything to be afraid of unless those fears are introduced for them.
Parents often feel more nervous than their children, which is understandable. But when Danceforce is presented at home as something fun and exciting, children usually take it all in their stride.
How Parents Can Support
The best support you can give your dancer is to keep things simple and positive. Celebrate what they are doing, remind them that it is exciting, and trust them to enjoy the moment.
Some of the most magical memories come from the quietest children who surprise even themselves with their performance. The stage is not something to fear. It is simply another adventure.
Memories to Treasure in Basingstoke
For many of our dancers, Danceforce becomes one of the defining memories of their time at Lynden. They remember the rehearsals, the excitement backstage, the costumes, and the applause. These are moments that stay with them long after the final curtain comes down.

Well we will never forget Ellen’s first Dance Force when she wouldn’t step onto the stage. But over time she gained confidence and enjoyed the thrill of being part of a team and what fun she could have in the spotlight. Now aged 20 she is progressing with her dancing career having performed with English National Ballet, Rambert Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. Never give up and always be thankful for those who supported you on your journey. Thank you Lynden Dance School 💕
